What is the best training for becoming a school psychologist? What types of ongoing training or certifications are necessary to be an effective school psychologist? What do non-traditional career paths look like? |

Attend a NASP approved graduate study program that awards a Specialist level degree such as Ed.S, or Master's degree plus 30 hours which will give you CAGS (certificate of advanced graduate studies). You will also need to pass the Praxis school psychology exam. Furthering education by attending local, state or national workshops. It is also required to keep up to date with state and federal law. Non traditional career paths typically mean working in a non-school setting. You may work in a hospital or other health care center. You may also work independently. However, separate licenses are required for these routes. |

Hi Monica, I'm a jr. undergrad. very shy student in class, do not talk much at all (major in psy.) searching for answers now that I finally have a clue as to what my career path ought to be. You've stated the best training to become a school psychologist is to gain "Master's degree plus 30 hours which will give you CAGS (certificate of advanced graduate studies). Monica, can you help me understand what do you mean to say when you state "plus 30 hours"? What is meant by 30 hours? 30 hours in what? attempted to plan / take steps that will result in my success. Can you clear matters? |

Can you clear matters? It means you will have a masters degree and than 30 additional hours in courses. Im in an EdS program currently. Classes concern special education, instruction, motivation, assessment, consultation, practicum, and internship, etc. |

I live in NY and am currently completing my graduate program in school psychology. After I graduate in May I am getting married and moving to Hudson, OH. How can I get information about qualifications that I need to work in Ohio. Im taking my Praxis exam sometime this year. What else do I need? |

If you want to work in OH, it would be important to know if your program qualifies for the national certification, NCSP, i believe most states accept the cert but some may require you to meet extra standards (state cert) |
